Chicago-based climate software fund Energize Capital just raised $300 million in growth funds. Chicago-based Energize Capital, formerly Energize Ventures, just raised $300 million to help close the growth funding gap for climate startups. The growth capital will be spread across 12 startups over a three-year investment period, with around half expected to be from Energize's earlier-stage ventures portfolio, Tough said. ☆ Edtech venture capital firm Reach Capital raises $215 million for its largest fund ever and has its sights set on backing more generative AI startups

Reach Capital has closed its fourth fund with $215 million to invest in education startups. The team is also looking to back more companies using generative AI in education, Reach Capital founding partner Esteban Sosnik told Insider. Near the end of 2022, edtech investing had just reached $8.89 billion in 2022, according to PitchBook. While generalist investors still have some interest in edtech deals, some of the hype has worn off. Reach has also backed several edtech startups that went on to become unicorns, or reach a valuation of over $1 billion, including Outschool, ClassDojo, and Handshake.

The returns show losses from Thoma Bravo and Clearlake, though the funds are new and PE is a long game. Thoma Bravo and Clearlake Capital Group, two private-equity firms that have emerged as notably active investors in recent years, have posted early losses across some of their funds, according to investment returns from a major US endowment. UTIMCO invested $51.7 million in Clearlake's seventh flagship private equity fund, known as Clearlake Capital Partners VII, which closed with some $14 billion of commitments last May. Thoma Bravo declined to comment. Meanwhile, the data show high returns from CapRock Partners, Renovus Capital Partners, Serve Capital Partners, and LFM Capital, PE firms that target middle-market companies.

A Texas hiker is warning other outdoor enthusiasts to beware of bison through a viral TikTok video that shows one charging her on a trail, sending her to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Clark, the Texas Park and Wildlife Department, and United Regional Wichita Falls, the hospital where Clark said she received treatment, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Once nearly extinct, bison now number half a million, with most part of private herds, according to the Texas Park and Wildlife Department. Caprock Canyons State Park is the home of the Texas State Bison Herd, which is monitored by park officials, according to the department. "As a rule, bison require at least 50 yards (half a football field) between them and people," the Texas Park and Wildlife Department said.
